Washing your teeth is healthy habit which should be done several times on a daily basis. However, you should devote little attention to your tongue as well. There are lots of reasons to do it.
When someone mentions oral hygiene, we assume they talk about washing the teeth. People rarely think about tongue hygiene, which is also very important. In fact, unhealthy tongue can lead to some serious diseases because it is exposed to numerous bacteria and microorganisms which we enter through foods and beverages. Infrequent tongue hygiene is the main reason for bad breath. Bacteria and microorganisms which disintegrate in the mouth make sulfur deposits in tongue’s lower area. Microorganisms which multiply in tongue’s warm areas are actually responsible for 90% of airways infections.
Irregular tongue hygiene can also be responsible for diseases and health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, caries, lung inflammation, infertility, osteoporosis, digestive system problems etc. This is why you should always pay attention to your tongue’s health and make it your habit. You should always clean your tongue, especially when you are sick.
The tongue should be washed same as the teeth. Put on some toothpaste on your toothbrush (you can put little bit of baking soda over the toothpaste). Since cleaning your tongue may feel uncomfortable, you should start by brushing the tip of the tongue first. Gradually go to the middle and then to the back part of the tongue because you will need to get used to this new procedure. Healthy tongue should have light-pink color. If you practice this procedure regularly, you will be able to avoid the risk of getting different kinds of diseases. You will also be able to feel flavors better and you will always have fresh breath. Your dentist will not hear from you for a long time because tongue’s hygiene affects teeth’s health as well.
