I am a huge fan of Kombucha. It has been brewed and enjoyed for over 2000 years all over the world. Many cultures have studied this amazing concoction and applied it to their health regiments, from Russia to China, and early Europe.

According to Einstein's special theory of relativity, there is no way to specify events that everyone can agree happen simultaneously. Two events that are both "now" to you will happen at different times for anyone moving at another speed. Other people will see a different now that might contain elements of yours รข€“ but equally might not.



The result is a picture known as the block universe: the universe seen from that impossible vantage point outside space and time. You can by all means mark what you think is "now" with a red dot, but there is nothing that distinguishes that place from any other, except that you are there. Researchers with the Department of Pharmacology of Government Medical College in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India performed a study comparing the effects of turmeric (curcumin) and Prozac (fluoxetine). The randomized and controlled clinical study determined turmeric was as effective as Prozac in treating major depressive disorder. Turmeric treatment was also absent of dangerous side effects often found in Prozac use.

The objectives of the trial was to compare the efficacy and safety of curcumin with fluoxetine (Prozac) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The study observed 60 patients diagnosed with MDD. Patients were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio for six weeks in an observer-masked treatment using fluoxetine (20 mg) and curcumin (1000 mg) both individually or in combination. To determine the efficacy of each treatment, the main variable used was response rates according to the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, 17-item version (HAM-D17 ). They also employed a second efficacy variable which examined the mean change in HAM-D17 rating after the six week observation period.

With the recent WHO decision about sugar, the topic has been in the media even more lately. Sugar is an addictive drug that made its way into households around the world and is "considered" safe. Those who ate a "traditional" diet of fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and whole grains had lower odds for depression, dysthymia, or anxiety disorders. Those who ate a more "westernized" diet with processed foods, fried foods, sugars, refined grains, and beer had a higher chance of developing these mental issues.

A healthy diet is critical--processed foods, fat, and sugars are empty calories void of nutrients. Bellies may be full, but bodies and minds are starving. For their study, a research team, led by Dr. Nicole Avena of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, recruited 504 participants and analyzed their eating habits. The participants also answered questions to determine their levels of food addiction. These questions included those that asked participants to agree or disagree with certain statements, including “I eat to the point where I feel physically ill.”

When results of the questionnaires were analyzed against the specific foods that the participants ate, the most addictive food uncovered by the study was… pizza. While this may come as a surprise to some, Dr. Avena explains that just the tomato sauce in a slice of processed pizza may contain more sugar than several Oreo cookies!
